About our project
This project will plant native trees and shrubs along the banks of the Seine River to restore this important aquatic habitat. The Vermette Park Memorial Grove is an opportunity to remember those we have lost with young trees that will grow tall and strong, provide homes to great horned owls and woodpeckers and to shelter shy deer.
Where the money goes
To buy larger, more mature trees to ensure their survival, build bark paths to the river, help build wooden walkways and a rough bridge over marshland.
Save Our Seine (SOS) is a community-based stewardship group whose mandate is to protect, preserve and enhance the Seine River Environment within the City of Winnipeg. An important objective of SOS is to promote the development of an ethic of environmental stewardship with local citizens through leadership, public education and participatory activities.
Many of the Métis people of Vermette and St. Germain, now part of Winnipeg, have left the country for the city, but recently they have begun to come back to visit their old communities. Their traditional meeting ground in St. Vital is now a busy baseball diamond in the midst of suburbia, not the welcoming place it once was. With the help of SOS, an abandoned rural community club on the banks of the gentle Seine River is being transformed into a memorial grove as well as a place to play the fiddle and to dance a jig on hot summer days.
