Re-connecting in TO

About our project

There are many vacant spaces in Toronto, but folks here are determined to bring life back to one of them! The Harbourfront Community Centre Community Connect Garden will be an interactive green space for all to enjoy, a kitchen garden for herbs and veggies and a story garden for children. The design features wheelchair-access paths and raised planting beds to make gardening easier for seniors. Butterfly-friendly, drought resistant and naturalized plants will be used to teach workshops to young people on the importance of biodiversity and the need for their ongoing stewardship of our planet, beginning right here at home.

Where the money goes

As it is a brand new initiative, the Garden will have to be volunteer-built from the ground up. Accessibility features rank high on the list. Large seating stones for children would make a lovely addition at story time.

What is the HCC Community Connect Garden?

Harbourfront Community Centre wants to restore the garden and create a Community Connect Garden in an overgrown, vacant space next to our Community Centre.

Our families would like a meeting space with large seating stones so children can spend more time outside and enjoy story-time in the garden. Kids from our Room 13 art studio and talented youth artists in our Mural Transformation Project will create original works of art to compliment the gardens. With the help of community volunteers, we have begun the hard work of clearing the space. We will make the most of what we have to work with and are prepared to commit as long as it takes to make it happen. We know that creating the Community Connect Garden is the right thing to do and we are determined to make our garden grow!

HCC is a welcoming place for all and we are committed to supporting the special needs of children, youth and isolated adults. We work in partnership with local residents and community-minded organizations to create a safe and supportive environment for people of all ages. We work to empower and improve the quality of life for our diverse, downtown neighbourhood and this exciting garden project will help do just that!

The Community Connect Garden provides the perfect opportunity for families, youth, adults and seniors to get more involved in outdoor recreation, have access to locally grown organic produce, learn more about environmental practices and enjoy an accessible garden space close to their downtown home.
